ONLINE RESOURCES FOR REVIEWING MOTORIZED SCOOTER LAWS Last updated September 21, 2004

The recent dramatic increase in the availability and popularity of electrically-powered scooter products has been the result of a combination of at least three things: technological advancements in battery and motor quality and performance, cost-effective manufacturing and design efforts of companies such as Razor USA, and strong consumer recognition of the desirability of such products at economically reasonable prices. These conditions now present dramatic possibilities for the present and the future, as they represent zero-emission, low speed, traffic-minimizing and economical short distance transportation opportunities only dreamed of in years past, as well as new generations of children’s toys that make use of electric power. All that…and they’re fun, too. We at Razor USA are proud to be emerging as one of the recognized industry leaders in the development of these technologies. As with any new technology, however, there may be expected to be a period of “adjustment” as the popularity of a product gains attention. Such is now the case with respect to electric scooters.

With the increasing popularity of these types of products, there has been increasing attention to the ways in which they may be used. The discussion, as we actually understand it, relates to the question of who may use an electric scooter on public property, like streets, sidewalks and parks – we at Razor USA are unaware of any existing law which makes it illegal to use an electric scooter on private property. Also, at the present time there is no single, uniform Federal standard governing the use of electric scooters on public property. As a result, the states (and, indeed, even individual municipalities within the states) are free to develop their own rules. Many states have enacted (or may be considering the adoption of) new laws, or have re-interpreted existing laws, in ways that may affect the use of motorized scooters, and many municipalities also may do the same.

To help our customers in complying with laws and pronouncements that may affect their use of motorized scooters, Razor USA has attempted to compile this listing of state-level “official” websites, as well as certain “general” sites which may help to identify state or local governments throughout the United States. Because the laws can and do vary, and can and do change rapidly, we encourage our customers to consult the “official” information which may be made available in your area.
